My Favorite Movies #2

So I really do plan to do more favorite books. I want to talk about Jane Austen’s works, but I also want to read or listen to a book or two before I do that so it’s fresh in my mind. Work has been crazy of late so by the time I get home I don't feel like doing much. I don’t really want to think so I watch random stuff and go into a vegetable state. So another week passes, and I'm faced again with what do I want to talk about? Well a few days ago I watched a movie that is connected to a TV series I’ve watched. It was one I thought I might talk about some time anyway. “My Hero Academia” and yes, it’s another anime.

So I will try to give a description of this show without any spoilers. The story is set in Japan in a modern to futuristic setting. Everything is basically the same as modern day, except that most people (80%) have super powers (corks). Because of this there is a literal occupation called being a Hero. If I understand it correctly “Heroes” aid law enforcement and are given a commission for the bad guys they bring in. And of course if there are supper heroes other are also super villains. In this world of powers there are schools that literally teach students (kids) how to be heroes and help them advance their corks. One of these schools is UA High School. You follow the main character as he gets into this school as well as follow his class mates. These students must fight villain, work with pro heroes, and work together as aspiring heroes. There is currently three seasons and one movie. The fourth season is coming out right now. I plan to wait until it’s out to start watching it because I know how this show likes to do cliff hanger episodes. If I wait until it’s all out then I can binge watch it.

Now what makes this show so good. Now I would like to mention I’m not a big super hero fan. It’s not that I don’t like super hero movies, many are pretty good, it’s just not a genre I'm big into. You could argue that that fantasy and super hero are not that different but so it is for me. I had heard about this show for a while and kept seeing stuff about it pop up before I decided I would check it out. It starts out a little slow, but I think many great stories do. They have to reel you in. There’s a lot of information to feed you (the audience) and it’s not wise to do it all at ones. But ones you know everything you need to, things pick up and they’ve got you hook, line, and sinker.

In the first season of this show you meet you main character and get to know him and a few other characters. In the second season you get to know his class mates. Now, not all of them, some have not had their time in the sun (yet). But it really draws some of them out and makes you care about them. This might be a world of super heroes with crazy abilities, yet these characters are real and relatable. It does not take the cheep easy way out of just focusing on these characters powers and fighting. This show can make you think you might hate this character and a few episodes late you’re declaring their your new favorite character. Season three continues to builds characters and the story. This show has a great story, don’t get me wrong, but I think it might excel more at character development.

Besides talking about what it means to be a hero, it covers such things as good people doing bad things. Or bad people being heroes. Can people overcome a terrible past to be a better person? As I said earlier it makes the characters very real. How about taking an arrogant hot head and make you care about him.

Now this show is not all serious. It’s loaded with humor. Just as often it’s funny as serious. It can make fun of its self too. There’s one character who very often has robot arms, and in a flash back his brother even points it out. ("What with robot arms?") I also want to talk about the art style. Now I know in the last post I said that I don’t care about art style as much as the story. But, I must say it took me a while to get use to the art style of this one. This one in particular felt a little over the top. (I mean the whole story is over the top, a world of super heroes, but I digress.) One thing that still get me in All Might’s smile. I’m sorry, that smile is not reassuring, it’s creepy. But ones you get use to it you can laugh along.

Now the creativity is amazing. I don’t know if one person came up with all the different powers, but color me impressed. There are the usual things like invisibility (although she’s invisible all the time) and super strength. But how about exploding sweat? Or literal engines in you calf muscles? Not to mention someone’s purple, sticky, hair balls. There are so many different corks, it’s fun to watch just to see what new ones the creators will come up with.

Now I should quick talk a little about the movie since that’s the main reason I’ve been thinking about this show and so why I’m writing about it. Over all I felt like it was a little over the top (but the whole show is so…) and it does not feel like it fits into the time line well, but it was still a fun watch. I watched about the first five min. and had to pause it, and I was already fan girling going, “I love this already! Why do I love this so much?!” Now personal the first ten minutes or so, were about the best, but I still went online afterward and order the movie. I watch some other people online reacted to it, and they point out that it would be great to have a movie with no big villains or a movie about All Might’s past, which I completely agree with. I don’t know if either of those will happen, but I will likely buy whatever they come out with so…

So, if you like super hero movies you will like this show. And even if you’re not big into super heroes, you likely will still like this show. It’s so popular for good reason.

Now if no one spoils season four for me, that will be great. (Who knows, I may give in and start watching it before it’s all out.) Well, I hope you will check My Hero Academia out if you find this at all interesting. Thanks for reading.
